One of Béla Bartók’s most enduring works, the Concerto for Orchestra was the final work penned by the composer on a commission by Serge Koussevitsky. Completed in 1943, the work, as the title suggests, treats the various sections and solo instruments of the orchestra as if they are protagonists in a concerto. In this monumental recording, Fritz Reiner leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with unmatched authority, “the [orchestra] playing as if it has been set on fire, with panache and plenty of power in reserve” (NPR).
